  1. Member of an ancient Mexican civilization
  2. that migrated south into the valley of Mexico
  3. in the 12th century, and in 1325 began
  4. reclaiming lake marshland to build their 
  5. capital, Tenochtitlan, on the site of
  6. present-day Mexico City.  Under Montezuma I
  7. (reigned from 1440), the Aztecs created a
  8. tribute empire in central Mexico. Nahuatl is
  9. the Aztec language and it belongs to the
  10. Uto-Aztecan family of languages.
  11. The Aztecs are known for their architecture,
  12. jewellery (gold, jade, and turquoise), and
  13. textiles.  Their form of writing combined
  14. hieroglyphs and pictographs, and they used a
  15. complex calendar that combined a sacred
  16. period of 260 days with the solar year of 365
  17. days.  Propitiatory rites were performed at
  18. the intersection of the two, called the
  19. `dangerous' period, every 52 years, when
  20. temples were rebuilt (useful as a date mark
  21. for archaeologists). Their main god in a
  22. pantheon of gods was Huitzilopochtli
  23. (Hummingbird Wizard), but they also
  24. worshipped the feathered serpent
  25. Quetzalcoatl, inherited from earlier Mexican
  26. civilizations. Religious ritual included
  27. human sacrifice on a large scale, the priests
  28. tearing the heart from the living victim or
  29. flaying people alive.  War captives were
  30. obtained for this purpose, but their own
  31. people were also used. The Aztec state was a
  32. theocracy with farmers, artisans, and
  33. merchants taxed to support the priestly
  34. aristocracy.
